Champagne and Sparkling Wine

For centuries the single greatest white wine in the world, Champagne, has come from the chalky hillsides of France. Many countries around the world make sparkling wine, each of them unique. Though so much sparkling wine is referred to as Champagne, true “Champagne” must come from the quaint vineyards of France. Much like the Bourbon makers of Kentucky the master blenders of California lead the way in sparkling wine made in the traditional method using the noble three grapes: Pinot Noir, Pinot Munier, and Chardonnay. The hallmark of “Bubbles” are it’s extraordinary finesse and complexity allied with a great concentration with virtually impeccable typicity, balance and fabulously seductive flavors.

The Backroads of America

Visitors to California and the Pacific Northwest seldom have time to get "off the beaten path" of the large appellations vineyards and explore the lesser-known vineyards often overshadowed by the reputations of their famous neighbors. Tucked behind or between, above or below the famous appellations are vineyards sharing weather conditions and geography with the grandest of French producers. Grapes from these vines can result in very fine wines, though seldom known outside the area.

American Chardonnay

From the red slated terraces of Napa to the shores of the Pacific Coast; reaching all the way “down under” to the wineries of the Santa Barbara resides the grape of true nobility. Depending on its provenance and soil, Chardonnay gives wines of profound intensity, powerfully scented, reflecting minerals, flowers, butter and oak. The ultimate gift of Chardonnay is its longevity, coupled with its ability to transmit the characteristics of the vineyard with inimitable style.

Harlan Estate
Set in the Western Hills of Oakville, rising above the fabled Napa Valley benchlands the estate is over 240 acres of natural splendor; oak-studded knolls and valleys, roughly fifteen percent of which are under vine, planted to the classic varietals:Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. But more than that, it is a family homestead; a place of great inspiration, carved from the raw land, built for generations.

Other “World” Reds

Bordeaux
To Many Bordeaux is the wine-lover’s nemesis. The red wine of Bordeaux can be made from a number of grapes, mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, although small amounts of Malbec and Petit Verdot are also used. The Bordeaux region’s fame dates back some 2,000 years when Romans first sang the praises of its wines delicate aromas and it’s earthiness. The prestigious “Bordeaux” wine chateaux’s are sometimes beautiful 19th century castles, sometimes simpler houses but the Bordeaux region offers a multitude of distinct characteristics from the vineyards within this magnificent landscape.
